Varberg’s first baths was established in 1823, located between today’s custom-house and the open-air swimming-baths. At first, the baths only had 5 bathrooms but since the number of guests increased, the building was enlarged in 1860 to have no less than 12 bathrooms. The guests were waited upon by 6 female bath attendants. The city gained an increasingly good reputation as a health resort. Among the guests who had come from a long way away was the Swedish author Esaias Tegnér, who underwent treatment here. 1852 became an important year for Varberg. At the time, the steamship traffic started operating along the coast from Göteborg to Malmö. This added to the wanderlust to Varberg. The city’s authorities soon realized that the new pressure Varberg was facing, the health resort needed improvements.
A second baths was opened in the summer of 1866. The building was at the height of modernity. It contained 20 rooms for, among other things, seaweed- and mud-baths, massage rooms and a sauna. The same year, the city’s first open-air swimming-baths was completed. Unfortunately, a very severe storm in 1884, that ravaged all along the west coast, destroyed it. Varberg’s second open-air swimming-baths was opened in 1886. The new baths was very similar to its predecessor. The same style of architecture was used, but naturally it was more modern. Guests were allowed to swim straight out into the sea, but that required the use of bathing suits. This open-air swimming-baths did not become of age either. It became one of the victims of the so-called “Christmas storm” in 1902, the worst storm that has struck the west coast within the memory of man. The third open-air swimming-baths was established in 1903. It is still standing and should be able to withstand even the worst storms.
Still remaining from the old health resort days, that over the years has developed towards the more salubrious, are the beautiful surroundings: Socitén, the sea front promenade, the baths and the open-air swimming-baths. But today’s health resort has so much more to offer. Since the 1920s, Varberg has become a health and spa resort for everyone, and the old concept health resort is slowly turning into the concept spa, Salus per Aqua, that is, health through water.
